How to Pack Your Home Like a Professional Mover
Packing is the most time-consuming part of any move, and doing it wrong can lead to broken dishes, damaged furniture, and lost valuables. Professional movers use specific techniques to protect your belongings — and you can too.
Essential Packing Supplies
Before you start, gather these materials:
- Sturdy cardboard boxes (small, medium, large)
- Packing paper (unprinted newsprint)
- Bubble wrap for fragile items
- Packing tape (at least 3 rolls)
- Markers for labeling
- Ziplock bags for small hardware and screws
- Wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes
- Dish pack kits or cell dividers for glassware
Room-by-Room Packing Guide
Kitchen (Start Here — It Takes the Longest)
- Wrap each plate individually in packing paper and stack vertically (like records, not flat)
- Place a layer of crumpled paper at the bottom and top of every box
- Pack glasses and stemware with individual wrapping inside cell dividers
- Use small boxes for heavy items like canned goods and cookware
- Wrap knives in packing paper and secure with tape
Bedrooms
- Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes — they go from closet to box in seconds
- Roll casual clothes and use them as padding for other items
- Pack shoes in their original boxes or wrap in packing paper
- Put jewelry and small valuables in a personal bag you keep with you
Living Room
- Wrap picture frames with bubble wrap and pack vertically in mirror boxes
- Remove legs from tables and wrap them separately
- Cover upholstered furniture with moving blankets or stretch wrap
- Pack books in small boxes (they’re heavier than you think)
Electronics
- Take photos of cable setups before disconnecting anything
- Use original boxes if you kept them; otherwise, wrap in anti-static bubble wrap
- Label all cables with colored tape or tags
- Remove batteries from remote controls
Bathroom
- Seal all liquids in ziplock bags to prevent leaks
- Pack medications in a personal bag
- Use towels to pad fragile items
Pro Packing Rules
- Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes
- Fill every box completely — partially full boxes collapse when stacked
- Label every box with room name and contents description
- Pack an essentials box with first-night necessities (toiletries, phone chargers, snacks, sheets, toilet paper)
- Don’t pack hazardous materials — movers cannot transport propane, paint, cleaners, or ammunition
